Ilorin court docks police officer one year after murder

A Police Officer, Samuel Akpomoshi, has been arraigned by an Ilorin Magistrate Court for alleged murder of Chairman of Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) , Ajase-Ipo chapter, Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State on May 29, 2015. The 23 years old Akpomoshi, from Igbaja, was charged with Culpable Homicide contrary to section 224 of Penal Code Law. The suspect allegedly committed the offence during a stop and search along Igbaja/Ajase-Ipo Road on the said date and was was arraigned one year after. The matter has been transferred from Divisional Police Headquarters, Igbaja to Police Headquarters, Ilorin for discreet investigation. According to First Information Report ,“When the driver eventually alighted from his vehicle, he provoked you (suspect) by stating that the Inspector General of Police has warned all police not to stay on the high way, the statement that generated hot argument and when fight erupted in between two of you, the rifle you carried accidentally discharged and the bullet hit the driver on the stomach that led to his untimely death while receiving treatment at University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH),”. The suspect pleaded not guilty to the charge when arraigned. The Prosecutor, Corporal Gbenja Ayeni told the court that investigation on the matter has not been concluded and thereby urged that the suspect be remanded at prison custody. Magistrate M.G Kamsom refused the accused bail, ordered his remand at the prison custody and adjourned the matter till June 7, 2016 for further mention.
